REVIEW - 2007
REVIEW OF THE FIRST YEAR
Phase 1 of the first awareness campaign aimed at the First Nations of Quebec is already completed. Launched last May, it ended mid-September. It all started under the theme, “There are other ways to catch our dreams…” that the Kanatha Foundation began, in May 2007, its Phase 1 of the first awareness campaign aimed at the First Nations of Quebec about responsible gambling. The campaign has been designed and conducted primarily by our First Nations’ stakeholders. Thirteen communities were visited, and in total 118 people were encountered by the team of stakeholders, to raise awareness of responsible gambling. Everyone has been informed of the various issues related to gambling as well as methods of awareness made available in their communities. In addition, nearly 4000 members of communities have participated in rallies, where several activities, including a community meal, were been provided all free of charge.
According to the many comments we received from various participants and other members of First Nations, the two-day workshop and the day of activities were a great success. In that sense, we invite you to cast a glance at the website LeJeuResponsable.com to get a good overview.
As a main partner, the “Fondation Mise sur toi” gave a major financial support to this campaign. In addition, a follow-up research is being carried out since the beginning of the awareness campaign by the University of Quebec in Ottawa in order to measure the impact among the communities visited.
Our team is already preparing phase II which will begin in May 2008 by visiting the community of Wendake, near the Quebec City region. Sixteen communities will be visited in 2008 and twelve other communities will be visited in 2009.
For the three-year campaign to raise awareness among aboriginal communities in Quebec, we believe the participation at nearly 370 people who will meet the awareness in responsible gambling team of the Kanatha Foundation and 16000 members of the communities will participate in the rallies, where several activities under the marquees, including a community meal will be offered for free.
